Cox were honored as the Big West Conference Player of the Week and
Co-Pitcher of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league on
Wednesday afternoon.
It is the second consecutive week that a Titan has won Pitcher of the
Week honors after Gina Oaks (Alta Loma, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga HS) won
the first award of the season last week after going 2-0 at UCLAs
Stacey Winsberg Memorial Tournament, including an upset of No. 1 UCLA.
Topping (Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS/Washington) hit .500 for the second
consecutive week (8-for-16) at the Fiesta Bowl Classic hosted by Arizona
State this past weekend, with a double and a run scored while walking
six times. She slugged .562 for the week and amassed an on base percentage
of .636. She has a hit in all of the Titans first nine games this
season and is currently on an 11 game hitting streak dating back to the
end of last season.
It is the eighth career Big West Player of the Week award for Topping,
who holds the conference record for winning the honor.
Cox (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill HS) was 2-1 with a 0.70 ERA last weekend,
including tossing a one-hit shutout of No. 14 Stanford on Feb. 8. Her
other victory came against No. 25 Massachusetts, 3-1. For the week, Cox
went the distance in all three games, striking out a team-high 27 batters
in 20 innings pitched and holding the opposition to two runs on eight
hits. Opponents hit just .121 against her this weekend.
Cox won the honor for the sixth time in her career, which ranks eighth
all-time in conference history. She shared this weeks honor with
UC Santa Barbaras Loren Thornberg.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action this weekend as one of 16 teams
at the round-robin UNLV Desert Softball Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. The
Titans open the tournament on Friday morning (Feb. 14) against No. 7 LSU
at 9 a.m. and will face Central Michigan later in the morning at 11:30
a.m.
