Topping, Oaks, Cox Named All-Americans May 22, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton seniors Jenny Topping, Jodie Cox and Gina Oaks were
all honored for their accomplishments this season, listed among the nation's
best on the 2003 All-America teams as announced by the National Fastpitch
Coaches Association on Thursday.
Topping earned her third career first-team honor in a Titan uniform, joining
Sue Lewis as the only Titans to earn three All-America honors in their
careers. It is her fourth career first-team honor, making the team in
2000 as a redshirt freshman at Washington.
Oaks and Cox were each named third-team All-Americans at utility player
and pitcher, respectively. It is the second career award for Oaks in her
career after earning first-team honors as a utility player in 2002, and
the first career All-America honor for Cox.
Oaks joins former Titans Tiffany Boyd, Denise DeWalt, Susan LeFebvre and
Chenita Rogers as two-time winners.
Topping (Whittier,
Calif./La Habra HS) was named the Big West Player of the Year for the
third consecutive season in 2003, either leading or co-leading the conference
in seven different offensive categories. She hit .438 on the season with
10 home runs and 36 RBI while setting Big West and school career records
for batting average (.443) and walks (137).
Oaks (Alta Loma, Calif./Rancho
Cucamonga HS) was named a first-team All-Big West Conference selection
at both pitcher and utility player while earning second-team All-West
Region honors as a utility player. She led the league in runs scored with
44 and broke Sue Lewis' 19-year-old school record with 150 career runs
scored.
Oaks finished the year hitting .284 with seven doubles, five home runs
and 20 RBI while also posting a 19-8 overall record with a 1.60 ERA and
180 strikeouts in the circle.
Cox (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz
Hill HS) was named the 2003 Co-Big West Pitcher of the Year, posting a
21-7 overall record in the circle with a 1.06 ERA. She led the Big West
in four different pitching categories including: wins, ERA, strikeouts
(224) and opponents batting average (.125).
She also hit .301 on the year with six home runs and 31 RBI while also
scoring 34 runs on the season.
The Titans finished the season with a 41-15 overall record and their fifth
consecutive trip to the postseason. Cal State Fullerton also won its fourth
consecutive Big West Conference title with a 20-1 mark.
