Softball Inks Four in Early Signing Period Dec. 20, 2002 Fullerton, Calif.
Three high school players and one transfer signed to play softball at
Cal State Fullerton during the early signing period, head coach Michelle
Gromacki announced on Friday.
The class includes transfer pitcher/utility player Marissa Marzan from
the University of Arizona, who signed a financial aid agreement, and three
high schoolers: Brooke Weekley (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley
HS), Candace Baker (Los Alamitos, Calif./Cypress HS) and Tiffany Hoff
(Vacaville, Calif./Vacaville HS).
Marzan signed a letter of intent to play for Arizona in the 2002 season,
but redshirted as a freshman and was released from her scholarship. A
highly-touted pitcher out of Bullard HS in Fresno, Calif., Marzan was
a four-year letterwinner as a pitcher and third baseman. She was twice
named a high-school All-American (2000-01) and was honored as the Cal-Hi
Sports state Player of the Year and Central Valley Player of the Year
as a senior in 2001 after not allowing an earned run all year. Upon graduation
she held eight CIF Central Section records and finished her career with
a national record 20 perfect games including twice setting the
national single-season record for perfect games with seven in 2000 and
again in 2001.
Weekley is a two-time All-CIF Southern Section Division I selection as
a pitcher, including first-team honors in 2001 and second-team honors
in 2002. Twice a team MVP, she was named the MVP of the South Coast League
in 2001 while helping the Cougars to their first-ever league title. Weekley
earned first-team all-league honors in 2002 and all-county honors in 2001.
Baker, a pitcher/infielder from Cypress HS, is a three-time All-Empire
League selection (2000-02) and was twice named All-County as a sophomore
and junior including first-team honors in 2002. As a junior, Baker
was also a first-team All-CIF Division III selection and is also a two-time
team MVP. She is a four-time ASA National Champion as a member of the
Tuff-E-Nuff travel ball squad (1997, 1999, 2000, 2002).
Hoff, an infielder from Vacaville HS, is a three-time All-Monticello Empire
League selection, earning honorable mention honors as a freshman and first-team
honors as a sophomore and junior. She was named team captain the past
two seasons for the Bulldogs and helped lead Vacaville to the 2002 San
Joaquin Softball Section Playoffs. She hit .400-or-better in her first
two years and hit .450 as a junior in 2002.
Cal State Fullerton (53-13 overall, 22-2 in the Big West Conference in
2002) opens the 2003 season on Jan. 28, 2003, with a doubleheader exhibition
against the Spanish National Team beginning at 5 p.m. at the Titan Softball
Complex.
