Mossadeghi
Powers Titans Past Gauchos, 3-2 May 5, 2002 Santa Barbara, Calif. Box Score Cal State Fullerton senior outfielder Yasmin Mossadeghi was 1-for-3 with a game-tying home run and a go-ahead sacrifice fly to lead the No. 9 Titan softball team to a 3-2 victory and a three-game sweep of host UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at the Campus Diamond in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Titans are 47-11 overall and 19-2 in the Big West. The Gauchos are 26-34 overall and 11-10 in league play. Gina Oaks (19-3) earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits, walking just one batter and striking out eight. She also hit four Gaucho batters on the day. Loren Thornburg (12-18) took the loss, giving up three runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out two. Cal State Fullerton opened with a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single up the middle by Jenny Topping, but the lead was shortlived as UCSB struck back with a run of its own in their half on an RBI single by Julia Tamai to knot the score at 1-1. Gaucho pitcher Loren Thornburg, who threw 140 pitches in game two of the doubleheader on Saturday, and Titan starter Gina Oaks were then locked in a pitchers duel until UCSB third baseman Chantal Pershing broke the tie with a shot over the left field fence in the fifth for the first home run of her career and a 2-1 Gauchos lead. The lead didn't last long as Yasmin Mossadeghi crushed the first pitch from Thornburg over the fence in left field and landed on the field of the nearby baseball stadium to tie the score at 2-2. Mossadeghi then gave the Titans lead in the seventh with a deep sacrifice fly to the left field fence to score pinch runner Brittany Ziegler for the 3-2 lead. Oaks then set down the side in order in the bottom of the frame to clinch the sweep. The Titans had numerous chances to break things open, leaving nine runners on base, including runners on first and second with one out in the first and bases loaded with two down in the sixth. UCSB also had its chances, stranding seven runners for the game. Cal State Fullerton closes out the 2002 regular season next week (May 10-11) as the Titans travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to take on Cal Poly in a three game series. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 5 p.m. with the final game on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. ####
