Eke Out Wild Doubleheader with Gauchos May 4, 2002 Santa Barbara, Calif. Box Score Game One Box Score Game Two The No. 9 Cal State Fullerton softball team broke out the bats in game one and relied on clutch hitting and relief pitching en route to a doubleheader sweep of UC Santa Barbara by the scores of 10-1 in five innings and 7-6 in the night cap in front of 192 fans at the Campus Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The Titans are 46-11 overall and 18-2 in the Big West. The Gauchos are 26-33 overall and 11-9 in league play. In game one, the Titans sent 10 and nine batters to the plate in the first and fourth innings, respectively, scoring five runs in each en route to the 10-1 victory in five innings. Titan pitcher Jodie Cox (16-4) surrendered just four hits and an unearned run in the fifth while striking out three batters. Katie Junge (12-12) gave up 10 runs (four earned) on nine hits while walking four and striking out two. It was the 12 consecutive victory for Cox (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill HS), who has not lost since a 5-2 defeat in the second game of a doubleheader at the hands of the top-ranked UCLA Bruins on Feb. 27. Fullerton struck first in the opening frame, sending 10 batters to the plate and watching five of them come home for the early advantage. Junior Jenny Topping and senior Yasmin Mossadeghi each had RBI singles in the frame as the Titans added another on a bases-loaded walk and two more on an ball which shorthopped the UCSB second baseman to close out the scoring. With one out in the fourth, the Titans broke out the big bats as Cox, Topping and senior Monica Lucatero blasted back-to-back-to-back shots for a 8-0 lead. Fullerton then tacked on two more with a two-run single to center by sophomore Brittany Ziegler. In game two, Jodie Cox slugged her first grand slam of the season to break a 3-3 tie in the sixth and entered the game in relief of starter Christy Robitaille to earn her first career save as the Titans eked out a 7-6 victory over the Gauchos. Cox pitched two innings, giving up one hit and striking out one. Robitaille (12-4) earned the victory, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits, walking four and striking out six. UCSB struck first in the second inning, scoring an unearned run on an RBI single by Sarah Brown deep in the hole at shortstop for the 1-0 lead. Catcher Jami Trinidad extended the Gauchos' lead in the third with a two-run shot down the right field line with two outs for a 3-0 advantage. The Titans got them all back in the fourth as a bunt by Amy LaRocque scooted past the charging pitcher and first baseman to score pinch runner Brittany Ziegler from second base and cut the lead to 3-1. Then, with two outs, oft-used outfielder Krista O'Hanian then slapped a double to left centerfield to drive home two runs and knot the score at 3-3. The Titans added four more in the sixth as Cox lined a pitch down the right field line over the fence for her first grand slam of the year and gave the Titans a 7-3 lead. UCSB would not go quietly, however, in its half of the inning, adding three runs on a bases-loaded hit batter and a two run single by Jami Trinidad to cut the lead to 7-6. Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday (May 5) as the Titans and Gauchos wrap up their three-game series with a single game beginning at noon. ####
