Titans Snap Skid, Sweep Pair from UC Riverside
Apr. 27, 2002 – Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score – Game One

Box Score – Game Two

The No. 9 Cal State Fullerton softball team pounded out 18 runs on 18 hits and snapped a two-game losing streak by sweeping a doubleheader from UC Riverside by the scores of 12-0 in five innings and 6-0 in Big West Conference action on Saturday at the Titan Softball Complex in front of 524 fans.

The Titans improved to 42-11 overall and 15-2 in Big West play while the Highlanders fell to 11-40 and 1-16. Cal State Fullerton remains in second place in the conference, one-and-a-half games behind league-leading Pacific, which defeated Long Beach State, 3-0 and 5-1, on Saturday.

In game one, Fullerton sent 17 batters to the plate in the first inning and saw 11 of them to come around and score as the Titans rolled to a, 12-0, victory over the Highlanders.

For the second consecutive week, junior pitcher Gina Oaks (18-3) had a perfect game entering the final inning of play before a throwing error snapped the streak. UCR then broke-up the no-hit bid as Brandy Chavez singled down the right field line. That was the most offense the Highlanders produced all day, however, as Oaks struck out two of the final three batters to close out the game.

Oaks went the distance, allowing just one hit and striking out nine while facing just two batters over the minimum. She was also 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs scored and a solo home run. Jodie Cox was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, while Jenny Topping was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Jenell Jackson (5-13) lasted just two-thirds of an inning for the Highlanders, allowing eight runs (four earned) on four hits and walking three. Jessica Gandara pitched well in relief despite surrendering four runs (one earned) on nine hits and also walking three.

In game two, Jodie Cox threw her fifth career no-hitter and her second in as many starts as the Titans cruised to a, 6-0, win in the nightcap.

Cox (15-4) walked three and struck out six just one week after tossing a no-no against Pacific in Stockton, Calif., last Saturday.

Cal State Fullerton put up three runs in the first, all with two outs, as Yasmin Mossadeghi had a two-run triple and scored when the Riverside shortstop threw the ball away for what would have been the third out.

The Titans added three more in the second on an RBI ground out by Jenny Topping and a two-run single by Monica Lucatero to complete the scoring.
Monique Baeza (4-21) took the loss for UC Riverside, giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits, walking two and striking out four.

The Titans and Highlanders wrap-up their three-game series on Sunday (April 28) at 1 p.m. at the Titan Softball Complex. Cal State Fullerton will honor its four seniors (Monica Lucatero, Yasmin Mossadeghi, Christy Robitaille and Shawna Robinson) in a pre-game ceremony prior to the first pitch.
