Split in Opening Day Action at SDSU Tourney Feb. 15, 2002 Poway, Calif. Mossadeghi Smacks a Pair of Home Runs in 4-3 Victory Box Score Cal State Fullerton vs. Florida International Poway, Calif. The Cal State Fullerton softball team got off on the right foot in opening day action at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament hosted by San Diego State as the Titans defeated Florida International, 4-3. Against the Golden Panthers, senior outfielder Yasmin Mossadeghi smacked a pair of home runs to lead the comeback as the Titans were victorious, 4-3. Mossadeghi was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs and two RBI. Sophomore Julie Watson was 2-for-3 at the plate while junior Amy LaRocque was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Cal State Fullerton struck first, scoring an unearned run in the opening frame after Mossadeghi reached on an error by the shortstop which scored Jodie Cox from second base for a 1-0 lead. That advantage would not last for long as Florida International battled back with three runs of its own over the next three innings. The Golden Panthers tied the game on an RBI single by Lesley Gillan and added two more runs in the third on a two-run home run by Jennifer Owens. But the Titans would not quit, getting a run back in the fourth on Mossadeghis first homer of the day to leadoff the frame and tied the game in the sixth on Mossadeghis second bomb of the afternoon. Cal State Fullerton took the lead for good in the sixth, on LaRocques RBI single. Junior Gina Oaks (2-1) pitched the complete game, giving up three runs and four hits, walking three and striking out a game-high 12 batters. Amanda Nealer (3-3) took the loss for Florida International, surrendering two runs on three hits and striking out one. No. 3 Stanford Steals One Away From Fullerton, 2-1 Box Score Cal State Fullerton vs. Stanford Poway, Calif. Stanfords Sarah Beeson lined a shot down the left field line to score teammates Robin Walker and Jessica Mendoza in the top of the sixth as the No. 3 Cardinal came-from-behind to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, in a duel which featured two stellar performances by the starting pitchers. The Titans Jodie Cox (2-2) threw the complete game, allowing two runs on five hits, walking three and striking out 13 Cardinal batters in the loss. Tori Nyberg (4-0) earned the victory for Stanford, allowing just one run (unearned) on two hits, walking two and striking out 11. Cal State Fullerton got on the board first, scoring on an error by the Cardinal shortstop in the opening frame. Then the pitchers went to work as the two teams went down in order a combined three times in the next four innings. That set the stage for Beesons late-game heroics. With one out, Walker singled and advanced to second on an error by the Titan shortstop. She was followed by Mendoza, who singled to center, advancing Walker to third. Beeson then lines a shot down the left field line to score both runs and give Stanford a 2-1 advantage. Cal State Fullerton had two more chances to make up ground, but were set down in order in the sixth and seventh innings as the Cardinal clinched the win.
