No. 7 Titans
Eke Out Doubleheader With SDSU Apr. 4, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Game One Box Score Game Two Cal State Fullerton freshman Jocelyn Evans drew a bases-loaded walk with two out in the bottom of the seventh to propel the No. 7 Titans to a 2-1 victory in game two and complete a doubleheader sweep of visiting San Diego State on Thursday night at the Titan Softball Complex. Cal State Fullerton extends the nations longest winning streak to 26 consecutive games and improves to 35-9 overall on the season. The streak is the second-longest streak in school history, surpassing the 25 consecutive victories in 1984. The school record for consecutive wins is 35 set during the 1987 season en route to a 59-10 overall record. San Diego State fell to 26-18-1 overall. The Titans got on the board first in game two on an RBI single to left by junior Jenny Topping to score Jennifer Holt for a 1-0 lead. The Aztecs evened things up in the fourth as second baseman Sarah Hershman grounded out to the catcher with Tiffany Goudy on second, but Goudy continued to round the bag on the play at first and slid under the tag of Fullerton pitcher Christy Robitaille to tie the score. Robitaille (8-3) and SDSU pitcher Bre De Santa (9-8) then matched each other zero-for-zero until the seventh as Brittany Ziegler led off the inning and was hit by a pitch on a 2-2 count. Holt then followed with a single through the left side to put the winning run in scoring position. Gina Oaks followed Holt with a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and, after Topping was intentionally walked, De Santa struck out Monica Lucatero to bring up Evans, who was pinch-hitting for Yasmin Mossadeghi. Evans worked the count to 3-0 and, after a strike, drew the walk when De Santas next pitch was in the dirt for ball four. Robitaille allowed one run on three hits and struck out eight on the night for the victory. De Santa scattered six hits and two runs while also striking out eight in the loss. In game one, the Titan bats were unleashed, as Fullerton exploded for nine runs on eight hits and junior Jodie Cox threw a one-hit shutout for her 12th victory of the year in a, 9-0, Titan victory in five innings. Cox (12-4) allowed the lone hit to Goudy in the second inning and shut things down from there. Cox struck out six and walked just one in the victory. Jessi Green suffered the loss, giving up five runs on five hits in two innings. The Titans scored five times in the first inning thanks to RBI hits by Cox and Amy LaRocque and was capped by a three-run home run to centerfield by Amanda Hockett for the early lead. All five runs came with two outs. Cal State Fullerton scored four times in the fourth, again with two outs, as the Titans loaded the bases thanks to a pair of hits and four consecutive fielders choices to bring up Lucatero, who deposited a pitch from Jeni Tornquist over the left field fence for a grand slam. Fullerton returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 6) at 1 p.m. as the Titans host long-time Big West rival Long Beach State in a doubleheader at the Titan Softball Complex. The series concludes on Sunday (Apr. 7) with a single game at 1 p.m. ####
