Titans Split Season Opener With USD Jan. 29, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Game #1 Box Score Game #2 The Cal State Fullerton softball team opened its 2002 season with a douleheader split against San Diego, falling in the first game, 2-1, but coming back to defeat the Toreros in the second game, 8-0, in six innings on Tuesday night in front of 262 fans at the Titan Softball Complex. Cal State Fullerton is 1-1 overall on the year while San Diego is 3-1 overall. The Toreros game one victory was the first in the series with the Titans and the two runs scored were the first ever for a San Diego team against Cal State Fullerton in the history of the series. In game one, the Titans struck first on a solo home run to straight away centerfield by junior rightfielder Jodie Cox in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. However, the Fullerton offense would go silent, notching just six hits and leaving a grand total of 10 runners on base throughout the game. The tandem of Gina Oaks and Christy Robitaille held the San Diego bats silent, allowing just two hits, but the Titan defense could not hold on to that slim one-run lead. Mary Ann Cane opened USDs seventh by reaching on an error by Fullerton shortstop Amanda Hockett and advanced to second base when teammate Lora McBay walked on a full count. After a pop-up to second base and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, Jennifer Delpit hit a hard ground ball to second base which jumped up and hit Shawna Robinson in the shoulder, allowing two runs to come home and give the Toreros a 2-1 lead. The Titans would not go quietly in the bottom of the inning, as they loaded the bases on three consecutive walks after opening the frame with two quick groundouts. Oaks reentered the game to pinch hit for Christy Robitaille and ran the count to 3-1 before popping out to the shortstop to end the game. Game two saw the Cal State Fullerton offense get back to normal as the Titans stole seven bases on the night, including a double-steal of home for the eventual game-winning run as they cruised to an, 8-0, victory in six innings. Cox was simply magnificent in relief of Robitaille, who pitched just two innings after working three innings of the previous game. Cox allowed just one hit, one walk and struck out eight to earn her first win of the season while also going 1-for-2 with an RBI at the plate. Sophomore Brittany Ziegler led the Titans with a 2-for-3 night in game two with two runs scored and an RBI. Cal State Fullerton took the lead in the second with runners on the corners as both Robitaille and Ziegler broke for second and third, respectively, and Ziegler kept coming after the throw went in to second base. The Titans added a pair in the fourth on an RBI single by Cox and an RBI groundout by Robinson for a 3-0 lead. Fullerton put up five more in the sixth to end the game on a bases loaded walk, an error by San Diego, and back-to-back RBI singles by Amanda Hockett and Ziegler. The Titans return to action on Feb. 8-10 as they travel to Tempe, Ariz. to compete in the Arizona State Fiesta Bowl Classic. ####
