No. 11 Titans Sweep Series from Hornets Mar. 10, 2002 Fullerton, Calif.
Box Score
Cal State Fullerton senior second baseman Shawna Robinson
singled home Jodie Cox in the bottom of the fourth to break a 2-2 tie
and propel the No. 11 Cal State Fullerton softball team to its 11th consecutive
victory and a series sweep of Sacramento State by a score of 4-2 in front
of 510 fans at the Titan Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Titans improved to 20-9 overall and 3-0 to kick things off in the
Big West Conference. The Hornets fell to 8-12 overall and 0-3 in league
action.
Robinson was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and the game-winning RBI,
joining Cox, Gina Oaks and Jenny Topping as Titans with two hits on the
day. The Hornets were paced at the plate by catcher Erin Coyne, who was
2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Christy Robitaille (4-3) allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out
three for her second-straight victory after earning the win against Florida
in the second game of a doubleheader on March 6. Jillian Bivert (3-8)
suffered her second loss of the season, allowing four runs on nine hits.
Sacramento State got on the board in the first, as Coyne smacked a double
to deep left field to score Cathy Coupar for the 1-0 lead. Cal State Fullerton
answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles
by Lucatero and Cox to regain the lead at 2-1.
For Lucatero, it was her 23rd RBI of the season and the 139th of her career,
which propelled her past Sue Lewis (1981-84) for the all-time mark. Lewis
had 138 in her stellar, All-American four years at Cal State Fullerton.
The Hornets tied the game in the second on a sacrifice fly by Coupar that
scored Lori Meixner, but that would be all Sacramento State could muster.
Robitaille set down the side in order in the fourth and the sixth and
got help from her defense as the Titans turned two double plays in the
fifth and seventh to erase any Hornet threats.
Cal State Fullerton added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double
to right centerfield by Oaks that scored Robinson to complete the scoring.
The Titans return to action this week as they host the most prestigious
spring softball tournament in the 2002 Kia Klassic at the Titan Softball
Complex. The field will feature 16 of the nations top softball programs,
including 10 teams currently ranked in the top 25 or receiving votes.
The tournament begins on Wednesday (March 13) at 5 p.m. and continues
throughout the weekend with the championship game to be held at 2 p.m.
on Sunday (March 17).
