Pacific's
Kading Sinks Titans in the Eighth, 1-0 Apr. 21, 2002 Stockton, Calif. Box Score Pacific sophomore first baseman Boni Kading doubled to right centerfield to score pinch runner Krystle Peterson from first base for the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Tigers won the deciding game of the three-game series, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field. Cal State Fullerton is now 41-11 overall on the season and 13-2 in the Big West Conference. Pacific is 36-13 overall and 16-2 in league play. In a match-up of contenders for Big West Pitcher of the Year, Fullerton's Gina Oaks and Pacific's Cindy Ball were locked in a pitcher's duel the entire game, matching one another zero-for-zero through seven innings. Oaks carried a perfect game into the bottom of the eighth until Ball singled up the middle on the first pitch to break things up. After Peterson came in to run, Oaks got Estee Okumura to pop up on a sacrifice attempt for the first out to set up Kading's heroics. Kading then sent the first pitch from Oaks to the wall in right centerfield to bring Peterson around from third and barely beat out a throw from Titan shortstop Amanda Hockett at the plate for the winning run. Oaks (17-3) struck out eight in 7 1/3 innings of work, giving up the lone run on two hits. Ball (22-9) struck out seven while scattering five hits and walking three. The story of the game for the Titans was the inability to
score as Cal State Fullerton squandered numerous chances to break things
open. The Titans left eight runners on base for the game, including runners
at the corners with two outs in the first and runners on first and second
with no outs in the sixth.
