Titans Win 29th Straight, Down 49ers, 9-1
Apr. 7, 2002 – Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score

Cal State Fullerton junior Jenny Topping smacked a one-out single to centerfield to break a 1-1 tie and help propel the Titans to a 9-1 victory and a sweep of Big West Conference rival Long Beach State in six innings on Sunday afternoon at the Titan Softball Complex in front of 607 fans.

Fullerton improved to 38-9 overall on the season and remained perfect in league action at 12-0. The 29th consecutive victory is the longest streak in the nation – active or not – this season, surpassing the 28 straight games won by Stetson. Long Beach State fell to 30-16 and 8-4 in the Big West.

Long Beach State scored first in the opening frame, as leadoff hitter Christina Zepeda reached on an error, was sacrificed over, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Catcher Arleigh Thorp then singled her home with a knock to right field.

The Titans tied the game in their half of the inning as Gina Oaks singled to right and went all the way to third as the ball got past the 49ers’ rightfielder and rolled to the fence. After a strikeout, senior Monica Lucatero singled through the right side to knot the score at 1-1.

Long Beach State pitcher Lindsey Knoff and Cal State Fullerton pitcher Jodie Cox matched each other zero-for-zero for the next three innings before the Titans broke things open in the fifth.

After Yasmin Mossadeghi’s home run was brought back by 49ers left fielder Lauren Johnson, the Titans loaded the bases thanks to a hit batter and back-to-back walks. That brought up Topping in a pinch-hitting role and she promptly sent a 2-1 pitch from Knoff into center field to score Amanda Hockett and Amy LaRocque for a 3-1 lead.

Fullerton wasn’t done there as Julie Watson reached on an error by the Long Beach State second baseman and advanced to second when the ensuing throw went wild. The second error allowed Topping to come home all the way from second base for a 4-1 lead. Oaks then smacked a double to left field to score Watson and complete the scoring for the inning.

The Titans continued to pile it on, adding another four runs in the sixth off relief pitcher Meredith Cervenka. Sophomore Brittany Ziegler had a bases-loaded double which sailed over the head of centerfielder Natalie Walker and Jennifer Holt’s RBI double scored Ziegler to invoke the eight-run rule and end the game.

Cox (13-4) went six innings, scattering three hits and allowing just one run (unearned) while striking out eight batters. Knoff (12-11) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits and striking out six. The two teams combined to strand 16 runners on the basepaths.

Oaks, LaRocque, Holt and Hockett each had two hits for the Titans on the day while Long Beach State was led by catcher Arleigh Thorp, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Thursday (April 11) as they travel to Loyola Marymount to meet the Lions in a midweek, non-conference doubleheader in Los Angeles. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
