The Streak
Continues as Titans Sweep 49ers Apr. 6, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Game One Box Score Game Two The No. 7 Cal State Fullerton softball team continued to slice its way through the record books, extending the nations longest winning streak to 28 games by sweeping a doubleheader from long-time rival Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon at the Titan Softball Complex in front of 586 fans. Fullerton improved to 37-9 overall and remained undefeated in Big West play at 11-0. The 28 consecutive games won by the Titans match the longest winning streak in the nation thus far this season, set by Stetson, which ended on March 24. Long Beach State fell to 30-15 overall and 8-3 in conference play. In game one, the 49ers ran into the buzzsaw that is Titan ace Gina Oaks, who held Long Beach State scoreless while scattering seven hits and striking out 11 to improve to 16-2 overall on the season. Lindsey Knoff (12-10) suffered the loss, giving up two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out two. The Titans got all the runs they would need in the third inning, as junior shortstop Amanda Hockett led off the inning with a solo home run to left to make it 1-0 and junior Jodie Cox singled home Oaks with the second run later in the frame to make it 2-0. Long Beach State mounted a threat in the fourth, but stranded three runners on base as Oaks got Christina Zepeda to strike out looking for the final out. The 49ers would be set down in order in the fifth and seventh innings while stranding a runner in the sixth to erase any sort of threats. In game two, it was the story of the long ball as the Titans smashed three home runs two of those by senior Yasmin Mossadeghi to defeat the 49ers, 5-0. Senior Christy Robitaille (9-3) got the win for Fullerton, going the distance and scattering five hits on the day while striking out six batters. Long Beach State ace Meredith Cervennka (17-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out six. Mossadeghi got the Titans on the board in the second inning with her seventh home run of the season to left field for the 1-0 lead. Cal State Fullerton added four more in the fifth as Mossadeghi struck again, this time with two runners on, sending a shot over the left field fence for a 4-0 lead. Cox would follow with a home run of her own to right center field to complete the scoring. The Titans have now won five consecutive games over Long Beach State, all via the shutout. Cal State Fullerton has also hit 49 home runs on the season, which stands just two shy of tying the school single-season record of 51 set back in 1999. Fullerton and Long Beach State will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Titan Softball Complex. ####
