Box Score The No. 9 Cal State Fullerton softball team scored five runs in the top half of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and held off a late rally by No. 8 Arizona State to defeat the Sun Devils, 7-5, in the semifinals of the 2002 Kia Klassic on Sunday afternoon at the Titan Softball Complex. Cal State Fullerton improved to 26-9 overall and remained undefeated in the tournament at 6-0. The Titans advance to the championship game for the second consecutive season and will face Texas (a 4-2 winner over Florida State in the first semifinal on Sunady morning) in the championship game at approximately 2 p.m. Arizona State fell to 28-7 overall and completed its run at the Kia Klassic with a 5-1 record. Junior Jodie Cox (8-4) earned the complete game victory, allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits, walking two and striking out five on the day. Erica Beach (17-4) took the loss for the Sun Devils, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. The Titans got on the board first in the third inning, on an RBI single by Jenny Topping that scored Julie Watson for the 1-0 lead. ASU tied the game in its half of the inning as centerfielder Jennifer Forner was hit by a pitch and stole second base, but she scored when the throw from the Titan catcher sailed past the centerfielder and rolled to the fence to knot the game at 1-1. Cal State Fullerton broke it open in the fifth, on a two-run single by Yasmin Mossadeghi and a two-run infield hit by Amy LaRocque for a 5-1 lead. The Titans tacked on one more on an RBI double by Shawna Robinson for the 6-1 advantage. Fullerton added another in the sixth on an RBI double by Lucatero, but then, things got interesting as Arizona State mounted its comeback. The Sun Devils got within 7-2 on an RBI double by Phelan Wright in the sixth and made the score 7-5 with a three-run seventh. Adrianna Garcia reached on an error to start the inning for ASU and was pinch run for by Blair Holck. She advanced to second on a ground out and the Titans were on the verge of ending the game after Cox struck out Kirsten Voak. However, the Sun Devils loaded the bases with a hit batter and an infield hit before RBI singles by Thompson and Wright to close the gap to two runs. Cox then ended the threat by inducing Kara Brun to groundout to first to end the game. ####
