Topping's
Blast Gives Titans Kia Klassic Title Mar. 17, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Cal State Fullerton junior catcher Jenny Topping sent a one out, 1-0 pitch from Texas pitcher Cat Osterman over the left field fence for the only runs of the game and gave the No. 9 Titans their second consecutive Kia Klassic title with a, 2-0, victory over the Longhorns on Sunday afternoon at the Titan Softball Complex. Cal State Fullerton improved to 27-9 overall and posted a perfect 7-0 record in the tournament. It is the 10th tournament title for the Titans in 22 years of the event dating back to 1981 when it was called the PONY Invitational until 1996. Fullerton has won its last 18 consecutive games and 19 of the last 20. Texas fell to 25-9 overall and finished the tournament with a 5-2 record. Senior Christy Robitaille (6-3) got the victory in relief of Gina Oaks, going four full innings and allowing four hits, while striking out four and walking two. Osterman (17-6) took the loss, allowing just two runs on three hits and striking out 11 batters. Osterman was dominating in the circle for the Longhorns, holding the Titans hitless for 6 1/3 innings before Topping singled through the right side to break it up. Texas threatened in the last four innings, putting two runners on in the sixth and seventh and leaving a runner on second in the eighth. The Longhorns had their best chance to score in the ninth inning as, with one out, Texas third baseman Wynter Turner singled to right and advanced to second on a walk to Tamara Poppe. After a pop up to shortstop made it two outs, first baseman Alexis Garcia singled to third base to load the bases. However, Robitaille got Sarah Wieszczak to pop up to second base and end the threat. That brought the Titans up in the ninth as, with one out, Oaks drew a walk on a full count to bring up Topping, who got a pitch up in the strike zone and hammered it to left field for the game-winning hit. Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Saturday (March 23) as the Titans return to Big West play against another Kia Klassic participant in Cal State Northridge. Saturday will be a doubleheader that will begin at 1 p.m. and the two teams will close out the series on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m. ####
