Titans Move on in Bracket Play with 9-0 Victory

The No. 9 Cal State Fullerton softball continued its roll throught the 2002 Kia Klassic schedule as the Titans rolled to a 9-0, five-inning, victory over New Mexico in a first-round championship bracket game at the Titan Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Fullerton improved to 24-9 overall on the season and has won its last 15 games and 16 of its last 17. The Titans are 4-0 in the Kia Klassic and will face No. 10 Fresno State on Saturday night at approximately 7 p.m.

New Mexico fell to 5-12-1 overall and 0-4 in the tournament. The Lobos will face Notre Dame in a consolation bracket game at 7 p.m.

The Titans were led by the long ball as three different players combined to hit four home runs in the victory. Junior Jenny Topping slugged two of those long balls and went 3-for-3 on the day with three runs and two RBI. Senior Yasmin Mossadeghi was 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI while Gina Oaks was 1-for-2 with her seventh round-tripper of the season, tying her with Monica Lucatero for the team lead this season.

Junior Jodie Cox (7-4) got the win for the Titans, going the distance and scattering four hits while striking out nine batters for the win. Hayley Punter took the loss for New Mexico, giving up five runs on six hits and lasting just 1.2 innings.

Cal State Fullerton put up three in the first on RBI singles by Mossadeghi, Cox and Amanda Hockett for the quick 3-0 lead and added four more runs in the second on back-to-back, two-out home runs by Oaks and Topping and, after a single by Lucatero, Mossadeghi cranked one over the center field fence for the 7-0 lead.

The Titans closed out the scoring in the fourth with Topping's two-run home run to right field that scored Oaks ahead of her for the 9-0 advantage.
