Lucatero, Oaks Named Players of the Week
Mar. 12, 2002 – Fullerton, Calif.

The No. 11 Cal State Fullerton softball team earned two spots on the Big West Conference’s weekly honor roll on Tuesday morning, as senior infielder Monica Lucatero was named the league’s Player of the Week while junior pitcher Gina Oaks was named Co-Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced.

It is the second Player of the Week honor this season for Lucatero (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS), who was honored during the week of Feb. 11after her performance at the Arizona State Fiesta Bowl Classic.

This past week, the fourth-year first baseman broke the school career RBI record with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the first inning on March 10 against Sacramento State. It was her 139th career RBI, which pushed her past Sue Lewis (1981-84), who amassed 138 RBI in her four-year, All-American career.

Lucatero hit .462 for the week in helping the Titans to a 5-0 record and an undefeated start in Big West play, while slugging 1.231 for the week, slugging three home runs and driving in seven. She also scored four runs of her own in the five victories.

Oaks (Alta Loma, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga HS) shared the weekly honor with Long Beach State’s Meredith Cervenka and was named Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week. Oaks was 2-0 this past week, posting victories over Florida and Sacramento State, allowing just one earned run in 12 innings and striking out 10 batters.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Wednesday (March 13) as the Titans welcome in 15 other teams for the 2002 Kia Klassic at the Titan Softball Complex. The nationally-ranked field features 10 teams ranked in the current NFCA Top 25 and one more team which is receiving votes.

Tournament pool play begins on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and continues through Friday when the teams are seeded for championship bracket play which concludes with the championship game on Sunday (March 17) at 2 p.m. Last year, Cal State Fullerton rebounded from a 1-2 record in pool play to win its ninth Kia Klassic title.
