Titans Sweep Doubleheader from Florida Mar. 6, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Game #1 Box Score Game #2 The No. 11 Cal State Fullerton softball team pounded out 14 runs and 14 hits en route to a doubleheader softball sweep of the visiting Florida Gators at the Titan Softball Complex on Wednesday night in front of 210 fans. The Titans improved to 17-9 overall on the season and have won eight in a row and nine of their last 10. Florida fell to 12-14. In game one, Cal State Fullerton put up seven runs in the first innings and junior pitcher Gina Oaks cruised the rest of the way in an 11-1 rout ending in five innings. Oaks (10-2) went the distance, allowing one run on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. She was also 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored, four RBI, a double and a home run. Junior Jenny Topping also got into the swing of things, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run and two RBI. Yasmin Mossadeghi was 2-for-3 as was Julie Watson. The Titans kicked off the scoring on an error by the Florida rightfielder and kept things going with a two-run home run by Monica Lucatero to make it 3-0. RBI hits by Watson and Topping as well as a bases loaded walk to Oaks gave Cal State Fullerton the 7-0 lead. Fullerton added four more in the third on Oaks home run and a hit batter with the bases loaded. Florida scored its lone run in the third on an RBI double to right field to score Jackie Marchetta. In game two, Amanda Hocketts two-out, two-run double to left field proved to be the difference as the Titans came back from a 2-0 deficit to win, 3-2. Florida got on the board in the third thanks to a two-run single by Katy Berger for the early, 2-0, advantage. The Titans got one back in their half of the inning, when Oaks sent her second ball of the day over the left field fence to cut it to 2-1. Cal State Fullerton was then set down in order in the fourth and fifth innings to set up Hocketts heroics. Topping led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on an infield single by Jodie Cox. That brought up Hockett, who set a 2-2 pitch deep off the left field fence to score pinch runner Heather Saltarelli and Cox for the lead. The Gators would not go quietly in the seventh, opening the frame with a single to center by Nikki Baldwin and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt to put the tying run in scoring position. That brought up designated player Mandy Schuerman, who hit a fly ball to left field where it was caught and thrown to third, catching Baldwin trying to advance for the game-ending double play. Robitaille pitched the entire game, allowing two runs on four hits, walking four and striking out nine batters. Cal State Fullerton returns to action this weekend as the Titans open Big West Conference play against Sacramento State. The Titans and Hornets will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday (March 9) beginning at 1 p.m. before closing out the series on Sunday (March 10) with the third game at 1 p.m. All games are to be played at the Titan Softall Complex. ####
