Take Two From Matadors Mar. 23, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Game One Box Score Game Two The No. 7 Cal State Fullerton softball team continued on a tear, winning its 19th and 20th consecutive games with a Big West doubleheader sweep of visiting Cal State Northridge on a chilly Saturday afternoon at the Titan Softball Complex. The Titans improved to 29-9 overall and remained undefeated in the Big West with a perfect 5-0 record. The Matadors fell to 18-13 overall and 3-2 in league play. Game two went extra innings as four pitchers were locked in a duel through seven full before Titan junior catcher Jenny Topping looped a single into short right field with two outs and two on in the bottom of the eighth as Fullerton defeated Northridge, 3-2. Junior Jodie Cox (9-4) got the win in relief of Christy Robitaille, allowing just one hit in two innings and striking out four of the eight batters she faced. Robitaille scattered two runs (both unearned) on four hits, walking two and striking out seven in the no decision. Jenny Wheeler (7-2) took the loss in relief for Northridge, allowing one run on two hits and striking out four in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Summer Richardson got the start and lasted five innings, giving up two runs on three hits, walking six and striking out six. The Titans got on the board in the third, scoring on an error by the Northridge third baseman for the 1-0 lead. That didn't last for long, however, as the Matadors put up a pair of runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Kia Fennell to take a 2-1 lead. Fullerton tied the game in its half of the fourth on an RBI single by sophomore Julie Watson and it stayed that way through the eighth to set up Topping's heroics. In game one, senior outfielder Yasmin Mossadeghi and junior Amy LaRocque each hit two-run home runs for the Titans as Fullerton defeated Northridge, 5-3. Oaks (14-2) won her eighth start in the last nine tries, allowing three runs on four hits, walking three and striking out 10. Along with the defense, Oaks and the Titans combined to strand seven Matadors on base, including striking out the Matadors' Amber Copelan with the bases loaded in the sixth and Northridge down by one. Mossadeghi, LaRocque and Jodie Cox had the hits for the Titans, but they came at crucial moments in the game. Mossadeghi's home run in the first came with two outs an Oaks on first base after a leadoff walk. Northridge then put up three runs in the third as Summer Richardson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and catcher Janine Grund had a two-run single up the middle to give the Matadors the lead, 3-2. The Titans bounced back in the fourth as LaRocque sent the first pitch from Northridge's Jenny Wheeler over the left centerfield fence for her second career round-tripper and a 4-3 Fullerton advantage. Cal State Fullerton added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Cox to score pinch runner Brittany Ziegler to complete the scoring. Oaks then struck out two of the final three batters in the seventh to close out the game. The Titans and Matadors will complete their three-game series on Sunday afternoon (March 24) at 1 p.m. at the Titan Softball Complex. ####
