The No.9 Cal State Fullerton softball team regained sole possession of first place on Friday night after a doubleheader sweep of Cal Poly by the scores of 7-1 and 4-2 at Bob Janssen Field in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

The Titans improved to 49-11 overall and 21-2 in the Big West. The victories, coupled with Pacific’s doubleheader split with Cal State Northridge earlier Friday afternoon, gave Fullerton a one-game lead in the Big West with one game to play. The Mustangs fell to 25-28 overall and 8-15 in league action.

In game one, four different Titans notched three hits on the afternoon and junior pitcher Gina Oaks struck out nine in a complete game effort as Cal State Fullerton cruised to a 7-1 victory.

Oaks (20-3) allowed just one run on seven hits while walking just one for the victory. Jamie Gelbart (8-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on six hits and walking one in just three innings of work.

The Titans banged out 14 hits for the game, 12 of those coming from four players. Jodie Cox, Jenny Topping, Amy LaRocque and Shawna Robinson had three hits apiece as LaRocque and Topping each added two RBI.

After falling behind 1-0 after one inning on an infield single by Kasey Poet to score Nicole Dansby.

Cal State Fullerton answered back with two in the second on a sacrifice fly by Krista O’Hanian and an RBI single up the middle by Robinson to take the lead. The Titans added two more on an RBI single by LaRocque and a sacrifice fly by Amanda Hockett for a 4-1 lead.

Topping’s two-run double in the third extended the Titans’ lead to 6-1 and Fullerton added one more in the sixth on a run-scoring single by LaRocque.

In game two, Cal State Fullerton sent nine batters to the plate in three-run fourth inning and the Titans rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to sweep the doubleheader with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

Cal Poly took the early advantage, scoring two in the first on an RBI triple by Kasey Poet followed by a Titan error for the 2-0 advantage. Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Graver then stymied the Fullerton bats until the fourth when the Titans broke out of their slump to take the lead.

Oaks got Cal State Fullerton on the board with a two-out single and the Titans took the lead on the next at bat when Jodie Cox singled to right to drive home one run and added another when that ball was booted for the 3-2 lead.

Fullerton added an insurance run in the seventh as Oaks executed a perfect squeeze play to score Amanda Hockett to complete the scoring. The Titans stranded 13 runners on base while the Mustangs stranded 10.

The Titans and Mustangs complete the regular season on Saturday (May 11) at 12 p.m. Cal State Fullerton will then wait to learn its postseason fate as the NCAA announces the 48-team field on Sunday (May 12) at 6 p.m.
