Titans Mercy-Rule Texas, 9-1, in Fiesta Bowl Finale
Feb. 10, 2002 – Phoenix, Ariz.

Box Score

The Cal State Fullerton bats finally awoke from their slumber on Sunday, banging out 11 hits en route to a 9-1 victory over Texas in the finale of the 2002 Fiesta Bowl Classic hosted by Arizona State.

The Titans finished the tournament with a 2-3 record and improved to 3-4 overall on the season.

Cal State Fullerton got on the board right away as junior Amanda Hockett slammed her first home run of the season with a runner on for a 2-0 lead. Gina Oaks and Brittany Ziegler got into the act in the second inning, smacking back-to-back home runs for a 4-0 lead as the Titans never trailed.

The Longhorns got a run back in the third as Wynter Turner knocked a run-scoring single to cut Fullerton's advantage to 4-1, but the Titan offense would not rest. Cal State Fullerton added two runs in the third on an RBI triple by Amy LaRocque and an RBI single by Monica Lucatero.

Luctero brought home another run in the fourth with a squeeze bunt that brought home Kristy Halagarda and Hockett had an RBI single. The Titans completed the scoring on an error by the Texas defense to make it 9-1.

Junior Jodie Cox (2-1) was simply dominating in the circle, throwing her second complete game of the season, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out 11 Longhorn batters. Lucatero was 3-for-3 on the afternoon with two runs and an RBI while Hockett was 2-for-2 with three RBI and a walk.

Catherine Osterman took the loss for Texas, allowing five runs on eight hits in only 2.2 innings of work.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action next weekend as they take on another nationally-ranked field at the Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State on Feb. 15-17 in Poway, Calif.
