MODESTO COLLEGE: Versatile newcomer with a varied background joins the Titans for his sophomore year... Played one season of soccer for the Modesto Pirates at central midfielder... Also played tennis and was the team's MVP and a state championships qualifier. HIGH SCHOOL: Two-year varsity letterman for Coach Stuart Kaplan at Fred C. Beyer High School in Modesto... Team captain as a senior while playing midfield... Team won a league championship and competed in the Section finals his junior season... Outstanding tennis player, winning four varsity letters and more than 100 career matches... Two-time city champion and runnerup as a sophomore... Played No. 1 singles as a junior and senior, No. 3 as a sophomore and No. 5 as a freshman... A section qualifier and a first-team all-league selection as well as team most valuable player as a senior... As a junior was team MVP for the league champions and a second-team all-league pick... As a sophomore was team's most improved player... Also won numerous speech awards as a two-time state and national qualifier... Won principal's award for leadership and academic awards from the governor and the Navy... Was selected best attorney at a mock trial... Is a California Scholastic Federation lifetime member. PERSONAL: Born on Aug. 30, 1984, in Indianapolis, Indiana... Parents are Arral and Indira Phipps of Modesto... Has three older sisters -- Marie, Michelle and Monique... Played club ball for Ajax United Attacke... Psychology major with a theatre minor... Goal is to become a drama therapist... Enjoys reading, tennis and musical theater... Most memorable sports thrill was playing on a club team that went to France for a tournament... Credits Coach Darrel Wilkins for believing in him and working hard to make him a better player.
