Top 20-ranked Stanford and Cal remained unbeaten in the 2004 men's soccer season Friday as the Cardinal beat UC Irvine, 2-0, and Cal beat host Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, in the first round of the Titan Classic.

Stanford is now 4-0-1 and will play Fullerton (0-4-1) on Sunday after Cal (5-0-0) meets UC Irvine (2-3-0) in a 5 p.m. doubleheader opener.

Stanford got a pair of goals from Darren Hernandez 85 minutes apart to beat the Anteaters. Hernandez' first goal came only 27 seconds into the match after he received a chip pass from Michael Brown and found himself alone on UCI goaltender Ryan Mathy less than 20 yards out. His second goal came on an unassisted dribble and drive to a curling shot into the upper right corner with less than 5 minutes to play. Andrew Kartunen made 3 saves to get the shutout for the Cardinal.

Cal got a rebound goal from Pieter Berger in the 36th minute of the first half to beat the Titans. Angel Quintero's shot was blocked by Titan goalkeeper Sam Reynolds but the ball caromed to an unmarked Berger about 15 yards away from the net. Quintero and Berger had entered the match as reserves only a few minutes earlier.

Reynolds was credited with 10 saves to keep Fullerton close as Cal outshot the hosts, 16-5. Golden Bears' keeper Eric Kronberg needed to make only one save to post the shutout.
