From the Bench
Oct. 15, 2004 – Fullerton, Calif.

Coach Al Mistri:

""We always have a tremendous game with UC Irvine and it's nice that we finally have some positive momentum going. Last week was one of the best we've ever had after losing in overtime at Santa Barbara and then beating UC Davis and then to add another win Wednesday night over Cal State Northridge would seem to indicate that we finally are peaking.

"We could be bemoaning the facts about our injuries, but the rest of the guys are stepping up. By now, virtually eveyone has played. Wednesday night, three people got their first goals of the season. Really, this is the closest thing to a total team effort I've seen and it has brought us together. The guys have been tremendous and never got discouraged.

"While we still have a mathematical chance at the conference championship, we have a good chance to be in second place and the second-place team in the Big West will most definitely be in the playoffs.

"Brett Gallinger is out for the season due to mononucleosis. He stepped in for us and was doing well but then started getting tired in the Davis match. We put Brent Barnes in for him on the back line and he did the job, which freed us to put Jose at striker and the results were pretty obvious. It's a testament to his versatility that we originally recruited him as a goalkeeper, put him at halfback to shore up our defense and now are using him as a striker because we have lost so many of our other offensive weapons."
