Northridge Wins Big West Title on Sims' Goals
Nov. 15, 2003 - Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score

Willie Sims scored two second-half goals Saturday night to give Cal State Northridge a 2-0 men’s soccer victory at Cal State Fullerton and the Big West Conference championship.

The Matadors finish the regular season 14-3-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the Big West despite playing a man down for 86 minutes. Fullerton’s season ends at 8-10-2 and 3-6-1.

Sims broke a scoreless tie at 56:12 when his kick from the top of the penalty box off challenging goalkeeper Sam Reynolds trickled across the goal line. At 62:51 his free kick from about 25 yards on the right found the upper left hand corner. However, Sims had to be carried from the field with about 23 minutes to play with an injury to his right ankle.

The Matadors’ Ronny Shields received a red card 4:05 into the match when he tackled a Titan on a breakaway from behind outside the penalty box.

Fullerton outshot the visitors, 22-9, but goalkeeper Radames Lafaurie had to make only 3 saves. CSUN managed only 9 shots and Reynolds made just one save.

CSU Northridge will learn its NCAA Tournament fate Sunday night.
