Northridge Wins Big West Title on Sims' Goals Nov. 15, 2003 - Fullerton, Calif.
Box Score Willie Sims scored two second-half goals
Saturday night to give Cal State Northridge a 2-0 mens soccer victory
at Cal State Fullerton and the Big West Conference championship.
The Matadors finish the regular season 14-3-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the
Big West despite playing a man down for 86 minutes. Fullertons season
ends at 8-10-2 and 3-6-1.
Sims broke a scoreless tie at 56:12 when his kick from the top of the
penalty box off challenging goalkeeper Sam Reynolds trickled across the
goal line. At 62:51 his free kick from about 25 yards on the right found
the upper left hand corner. However, Sims had to be carried from the field
with about 23 minutes to play with an injury to his right ankle.
The Matadors Ronny Shields received a red card 4:05 into the match
when he tackled a Titan on a breakaway from behind outside the penalty
box.
Fullerton outshot the visitors, 22-9, but goalkeeper Radames Lafaurie
had to make only 3 saves. CSUN managed only 9 shots and Reynolds made
just one save.
CSU Northridge will learn its NCAA Tournament fate Sunday night.
