Bruins Win in OT to Capture SOCCER TOWN Title Sept. 1, 2002 Fullerton, Calif.
Jimmy Frazelle scored five minutes into the first sudden victory overtime
period for the only score in 205 minutes of action Sunday night to give
UCLA a 1-0 win over Florida International and the championship of the
2002 SOCCER TOWN Men's Soccer Classic at Cal State Fullerton.
The Bruins went 2-0 in the tourney to gain the title over the host Titans,
who later played a scoreless tie with Boston University to finsh with
a 1-0-1 tourney slate.
Frazelle's shot from near the top of the penalty box deflected off an
FIU defender before scooting past Golden Panther goalkeeper Roy Rosenberg.
Chadd Davis and Ty Maurin assisted on the goal.
Fullerton goalkeeper Sam Reynolds came up big for the Titans, making two
outstanding saves in the closing minutes of regulation to keep the Titans
unbeaten on the young season. Matt Smith had nine saves for the visiting
Terriers, who were outshot, 13-8.
UCLA senior Scot Thompson was selected the outstanding defensive player
of the tourney and Fullerton junior Hector Orellana, who had two goals
on Friday night, was tabbed the top offensive player.
UCLA visits Titan Stadium to meet Fullerton on Friday night at 7 p.m.
