Titans
Hang On Late For First Win of the Season Nov. 20, 2004 New Britain, CT Box Score Cal State Fullerton had four starters in double figures led by sophomore guard Bobby Brown's 21 points and the Titans held off a furious run by Colgate to clinch their first win of the year, 75-68, on Saturday in the consolation game of the Mohegan Sun Classic in New Britain, CT. Fullerton improved to 1-1 overall on the season while the Raiders fell to 0-2 overall. The Titans led by as many as 15 points early on the second half, but Colgate battled back to close to within eight points at the 9:21 mark on a jumper by Andrew Zidar that made it 60-52. Three free throws and a three-pointer by Jon Simon with just under six minutes to play brought the Raiders to within six points at 64-58. However that would be as far as Colgate could get as the teams traded baskets and the Titans got clutch shooting from Yaphett King, who scored seven of Fullerton's final 11 points to seal the victory. Brown hit on 7-of-12 from the floor, including five three pointers to lead all Titans. Hardy Asprilla had a double-double with 13 points and 14 boards while Jermaine Harper and King added 15 and 11 points, respectively. Harper also added seven assists. Both Asprilla and Harper were later named to the all-tournament team. Simon scored a game-high 24 points for the Raiders and was joined in double figures by teammates Alvin Reed (14) and Keith Williams (10). The Titans commanded the opening period, leading almost wire-to-wire save for a 2-2 tie in the opening moments of the game. Leading by a point at 9-8 five minutes in, the Titans exploded for a 12-3 run over the next three minutes to build a 10-point lead with just over 12 minutes left in the half. Colgate hung tough, closing to within six points on a couple occassions midway through the half and eventually whittled the Titans' lead down to five points at 33-28 with 3:23 remaining in the half. That would be as close as the Raiders would get, however, as Asprilla and Harper scored Fullerton's final 10 points of the half – including 6-for-6 at the free throw line – to put the Titans up 43-30 at the break. Fullerton shot just under 46 percent from the floor for the contest to the Raiders' 40 percent. Colgate held a 38-31 advantage on the boards. Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 27) with a Thanksgiving weekend home-opener against Hope University at Titan Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ####
