Box Score

Senior guard Erik Benzel (Spokane, Wash.) scored his 1,000 career-point and added 15 points to help lead the Pioneers to a 79-57 victory over Cal State Fullerton this evening in Magness Arena.

Sophomore forward Antonio Porch (Denver, Colo.) added a career-high 21 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double performance. The Pioneers improve to 3-2 while the Titans fall to 2-2.

With 15:11 left in the first half, Benzel sunk a 3-pointer to tally his 1,001 career-point and put Denver ahead 11-5. Benzel becomes the 26th Pioneer in the history of men’s basketball to record 1,000 career points. He finished the game with 15 points, including five 3-pointers along with four rebounds and four assists.

Denver ended the first half with a dominating 19-point lead and held a 13 point advantage for much of the first to come away 45-26. The Pioneers were 43.2 percent from the field (16-of-37), while Fullerton was only 31.5 percent (11-of-35). Porch led all scorers in the first half with 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior center Yemi Nicholson (Denver, Colo.) and first year junior transfer Andrew Carpenter (Toronto, Ontario) combined to add 16 points and eight total boards.

Senior guard Rodney Billups’ (Denver, Colo.) five assists in the first half put him in eighth place on Denver’s all-time assists list with 246. Billups ended the game with five points, six assists and three steals. Billups’ is now two assists shy of ninth all time on Denver’s steals list.

The Pioneers scoring arsenal was too much for the Titans to handle. With Cal State trying to avenge a 19-point deficit from the first half, Denver still scored 34 points and shot 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from the field while Fullerton managed to add 31 in the second half and was 39.4 percent from the field (19-of-33). Denver finished the game with three Pioneers scoring in double figures and combined for 50 points. Porch, Nicholson and Benzel added 21, 14 and 15 points, respectively.

“We came out and took the fight to them,” head coach Terry Carroll said. “I thought our intensity on the defensive end and the glass allowed us to build and sustain our lead.”

Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Dec. 10 as the Titans hit the road to take on Eastern Washington at 7:05 p.m.
