Late Titan
Rally Comes Up Short at SDSU Dec. 21, 2004 San Diego, Calif. Box Score Jamaal Brown's attempted 3-point field goal bounced off the rim at the buzzer and San Diego State escaped with a 63-60 non-conference victory Tuesday night in Cox Arena. The Titans (3-3) rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit but couldn't quite catch the Aztecs (5-5), who got 15 points and 13 rebounds from Marcus Slaughter in snapping a 4-game losing streak. Guard Bobby Brown led the Titans with 27 points as he matched his career high with seven 3-point field goals in only 11 attempts. But the Titans shot only 29 percent from the floor as a team with no one hitting more than 50 percent. Yaphett King had 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. But Jamaal Brown was only 3 for 13 from the floor and Ralphy Holmes was 0 for 9 in the season debut for each player. The Titans had only one lead in the game at 2-0. The Aztecs took an early 18-6 advantage and the Titans were happy to be down only 32-26 at the half as Jamaal Brown, Holmes and King each picked up three personal fouls. Fortunately, the Aztecs hit only 3 of 13 free throws before intermission. Fullerton pulled within two points at 38-36 a few minutes into the second half and had a couple of shots to tie or lead. But Slaughter scored 5 points to key a 10-0 SDSU run and the Aztecs looked comfortable with a 57-42 lead with 5:21 to play. Hardy Asprilla made two free throws and King and Bobby Brown hit back-to-back treys and suddenly it was a 57-50 game with 2:25 left. Asprilla made two more free throws to make it 57-52 only for SDSU to pull out to a 61-52 edge. But B. Brown hit a pair of 3-pointers in a span of six seconds and it was 61-58 with a minute to play. King's basket made it 61-60 with 11 seconds left and Brandon Heath hit two free throws with seven seconds to go for the final score. Fulllerton returns to action Thursday night in Titan Gym hosting University of Denver in a rematch of a Titan loss in Denver on Dec. 4. ####
