Bobby Brown scored 21 points to go with a career-high 13 assists and Jermaine
Harper and Hardy Asprilla added 16 points each Saturday night to lead
Cal State Fullerton to a 107-73 non-conference victory over Hope International.
Three other Titans were in double figures as Fullerton improved to 2-1,
its best start 1998-99 season.
Francisco Acevedo came off the bench to lead the Royals with 17 points.
Hope International, an NAIA institution located across the street from
CSF, treated the game as an exhibition and its record remains 1-2.
Fullerton shot 65 percent from the floor, converting numerous breakaways
out of 26 Royals turnovers. The point total was Fullerton’s highest
since a 110-98 win over Cal Poly SLO on Feb. 27, 1997.
Hope made 10 of 23 3-point field goals while shooting 52 percent overall.
The Royals entered the game shooting only 21 percent from 3-point range.
Asprilla led all rebounders with 9 while Mark Roussin and Rodrigo Clemente
each had 5 for the Royals.
Hope jumped out to an early 8-3 lead behind 3-pointers from Jonathan Leitch
and Jacob Betham. But after a timeout, Fullerton went on a 26-7 run over
the next 6 minutes to take a 29-15 lead with 12:02 remaining in the first
half. Hope pulled within 7 points at 29-22 at 9:59 but Fullerton went
on a 13-0 spurt for a 42-22 lead with 4:37 remaining and the Royals never
got closer than 15 points again.
Fullerton travels to Denver next Saturday while Hope hosts Cal State Dominguez
Hills on Dec. 7.
