Reserve guard David Warsaw scored 16 points and Yaphett King added 12
Saturday night to lead Cal State Fulleton to a 70-59 Big West Conference
victory over Idaho.
Tyrone Hayes had 17 points for the Vandals, who fell to 5-11 overall and
2-5 in the Big West. Fullerton is 6-10 and 2-5 and snapped a 4-game home-court
losing streak.
Only two other players were in double figures -- Yaphett King with 12
for Fullerton and Tanoris Shepard with 10 for Idaho, 9 in the first half.
Warsaw hadn't played in 7 games due to a sprained ankle which had limited
him to only 56 minutes in 4 games all season. He made 7 of 8 foul shots
and 4 of 6 shots from the floor including a 3-pointer to beat the shot
clock just before the half, which left Idaho with a 29-25 lead.
Fullerton got 3-pointers from Bobby Brown and King in the first 1:04 of
the second half to forge a 31-31 tie and the Titans took the lead for
good at 45-44 on Zakee Smith's drive through the lane at 10:34. That shot
triggered a 10-0 Fullerton run capped by two free throws by Pape Sow,
who was held to 9 points and 8 rebounds.
Idaho got as close as 6 points at 53-47 on a 3-pointer by Dandrick Jones
but Warsaw scored 11 points down the stretch to hold off Idaho.
Idaho stifled Fullerton's offense in the early going, building a 14-3
lead in the first 9 minutes of the game. Fullerton didn't get its second
field goal until the 8:15 mark and Idaho led by as many as 13 points at
20-7 with 6:43 before intermission.
Fullerton travels to Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara next week to wrap up
the first half of the Big West schedule. Idaho hosts Long Beach State
and UC Irvine.
