Senior guard Derick Andrew scored 18 points and junior forward Hardy Asprilla
added 10 rebounds but it wasn't enough Monday night as Cal State Fullerton
came up on the short end of an 83-76 non-conference game at Arizona State.
Andrew contributed a late 3-point field goal before fouling out. That
helped the Titans draw within 4 points at 80-76 with 11 seconds to go
but Anthony Bolton's 3-point field goal try missed and the Titans had
to foul on the rebound.
Ike Diogu led the Sun Devils with 22 points and 9 rebounds but had only
6 points in the first half in a battle with the Titans' Pape Sow, who
totaled 14 points and 8 rebounds before fouling out. Brian Pruitt had
9 points and 6 rebounds for the Titans before he, too, fouled out. The
Titans were cited for 36 personal fouls while ASU drew 22 whistles.
A 12-2 run by ASU produced a 10-point halftime lead, 41-31, and the Titans
stayed within striking range until the waning seconds. Bolton also finished
with 14 points and Babacar Camara had 9 points and a pair of rebounds
in a season debut delayed one game by food poisoning Friday at Northern
Arizona.
Cal State Fullerton will open the home portion of its schedule on Saturday
night against Sacramento State. The Hornets lost their season opener at
Stanford and have a home game Tuesday night vs. Dominican before visiting
Titan Gym.
