Center Pape Sow scored 26 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in only 22 minutes
of play Thursday night to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 99-87 exhibition
victory over EA Sports All-Stars.
Four other Titans were in double figures with David Warsaw scoring 17
points and Hardy Asprilla adding 13. Jerome Joseph had 26 points and Jeff
Parris had 24 plus 8 rebounds to lead EA Sports.
Sow played only 6 minutes in the first half because of two personal fouls
but still managed 4 points and 7 rebounds as Fullerton jumped out to a
17-5 lead. But with Sow on the bench, EA Sports got back ito the game
and trailed by only 3 points at the half, 46-43.
Even with Sow dominating both ends of the floor in the second half, the
Titans couldn't pull away from the visitors, who were still within 6 points
at 81-75 with 5 minutes to play. But Asprilla scored 8 consecutive points
for the Titans, the last on a 3-pointer for an 89-78 lead with 3:09 to
play.
Despite the win, new head coach Bob Burton was not pleased with his team's
performance.
"We were awful.. we couldn't guard anybody," he said. "We
were so bad defensively, it was really discouraging. Nothing went smoothly.
If we play like that next week (Friday at Northern Arizona and at Arizona
State on Nov. 24) it won't ven be close.
"It's obvious that Pape Sow has to be on the floor for us. He was
terrific and changed the game."
