Titans Overcome Odds to Beat Sacramento State Dec. 21, 2002 Sacramento, Calif. Box Score
Anthony Bolton notched his first career double-double with 20 points and
10 rebounds as undermanned Cal State Fullerton surprised Sacramento State,
62-54, in a nonconference men's basketball game at Hornet Gym Saturday
night.
The Titans snapped a four-game losing steak to improve to 2-6 on the season
while the Hornets fell to 4-5.
With four regulars – Bron Groomes, Pape Sow, Brandon Campbell and
Denver Lopez – out for a variety of reasons, the Titans suited up
just eight players, but then center Babacar Camara went down after only
10 seconds of play. Camara was taken to the hospital for X-rays for what
appeared to be a broken ankle but turned out to be a severe sprain.
Nonetheless, the Titans grabbed an early 5-3 lead and never trailed. The
Hornets cut the lead to 28-27 late in the first half, but Fullerton closed
out the half on a 10-0 run and also scored the first four points of the
second half to take a 42-27 lead.
Fullerton's lead remained in double figures for most of the half, though
the Hornets were able to cut the final margin to eight points when the
Titans missed their final seven free throws.
Bolton, who scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half, surpassed his
previous high of 15 points. Ralphy Holmes added 21 points and 11 rebounds
for Fullerton, which outrebounded the Hornets, 41-22. Tony Champion was
the high-point man for the Hornets with 13.
The Titans will take a week off for Christmas before returning to Northern
California for a match-up with San Francisco next Saturday.
