Ralphy Holmes scored 20 points and Pape Sow
added 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds Monday night as Cal State
Fullerton won its first game of the season and its home opener with a
74-56 non-conference victory over Morris Brown College.
Fullerton, now 1-2, also got 15 points from Bron Groomes in logging its
most lopsided win over a Div. I opponent since a 68-44 win over San Jose
State on Dec. 11, 1999. The Wolverines got 18 points and 9 rebounds from
Reshard Alonza in falling to 1-3.
The Titans never trailed and moved out to a double-digit lead in the first
eight minutes with Groomes scoring back-to-back hoops for a 21-10 advantage.
The Titans opened up a 14-point lead at the half and then stretched the
advantage to as many as 22 points at 55-33 with 12:43 to play after a
basket by Jamal Forcheney. The Wolverines went on a 9-0 run to cut the
margin to 55-42 at 10:48 on two free throws by Anthony Adams. But Holmes
hit a jumper and his 3-point basket at 8:38 make it a 62-44 game with
8:38 remaining and Morris Brown never got closer than 16 points again.
Fullerton outrebounded the Wolverines, 46-33, but neither team shot well
from the field or the foul line.
Fullerton hosts Pepperdine on Wednesday night while Morris Brown goes
home to Atlanta to host Eastern Kentucky.
