Mike Hood scored 21 points and Stanislav Zuzak
added 17 Saturday night to lead UC Irvine to a 72-52 Big West Conference
victory over Cal State Fullerton. The Anteaters avenged an earlier overtime
loss in Titan Gym and improved their record to 13-7, 7-4. Fullerton got
14 points from both Pape Sow and Fedi Holm-Hadulla but lost its third
in a row and seventh out of eight games to fall to 6-15, 4-7.
UCI shot 68 per cent from the floor in the second half to stretch a 25-16
intermission advantage. Hood hit 7 of 9 shots for the game including 5
of 7 3-point tries. Zuzak made 8 of 12 shots and the Anteaters combined
to hit all 15 free throws.
Holm-Hadulla hit 4 of 9 3-point tries to keep Fullerton in striking range
until the final five minutes. A Sow layup at 13:27 got Fullerton within
8 points at 39-31 but UCI responded with a 10-2 run and the Titans cold
get only as close as 12 points.
The game was tied only once at 2-2 and UCI never trailed after building
a methodical 9-2 lead. Fullerton didn't get its second basket until Ralphy
Holmes made a steal and a layup at 11:42 of the first half.
Fullerton has only one game next week, playing Wednesday night in a KDOC
TV (Channel 56) game at UC Riverside.
