Curtis Slaughter scored 18 points and Ian Boylan added 15, mostly down
the stretch Saturday night, as Cal State Northridge held off Cal State
Fullerton for a 70-62 Big West Conference victory.
The win evened the Matadors' overall record at 13-13 and put them in a
tie with Fullerton and Pacific in sixth place in the Big West at 7-9.
Fullerton is 9-17 overall.
Pape Sow led the Titans with 19 points and 12 rebounds, but Ralphy Holmes
(5 for 16) and Anthony Bolton (1 for 7) combined to make only 6 of 23
shots, 0-for-11 from 3-point range, as they settled for 13 and 4 points,
respectively.
Fedi Holm-Hadulla scored 14 points, all in the second half, to help the
Titans cut a 17-point deficit to as few as 6 points at 65-59 with 1:17
to play. But Boylan hit 3 out of 4 free throws and Lionel Benjamin hit
two more to thwart Fullerton.
After Fullerton jumped out to a 5-0 start on 5 points by Amir Bar-Netzer,
the Matadors went on an extended 24-7 run to take a 24-12 lead with 7:14
remaining in the first half and the Titans were forced to play catch up
all evening.
Each team shot 29 free throws and the Matadors made
four more than Fullerton, 23 to 19. Northridge also made four more 3-point
field goals than the Titans and those differences represent the 8-point
spread.
Fullerton is home next week to first-place UC Santa
Barbara and Cal Poly. Northridge and Pacific are on the road north, playing
at Idaho and Utah State.
