Cal State Fullerton on Saturday won both the men's and women's championships
of the Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California with
victories over Cal Tech and UC San Diego. The Titan men beat Cal Tech,
22-5, while the women won, 21-6. Both teams edged UCSD with the men winning,
19-8, and the women winning by a narrow 14-13 score.
For the season,
Fullerton compiled a 12-0 mark in men's competition to finish ahead of
UC San Diego (10-2), USC (8-4), Cal Tech (5-7), UC Santa Barbara (4-8),
UCLA (3-9) and UC Irvine (0-12). The women went 11-1 to finish ahead of
UCSD (10-2), UCLA (8-4), USC (6-6), UC Irvine (4-8), Cal Tech (2-10) and
UCSB (2-10).
In individual results, Alex Decker finished the conference season at 36-0
in men's foil. He was 54-6 overall. Roland Breden and Brian Fraser each
went 35-1 in IFCSC men's foil and 53-7 overall. Matthew McConnaughy (epee)
was 34-2, 53-7; Patrick Harder (sabre) was 34-2, 53-7 and James Lukens
(sabre) was 32-4, 51-9.
On the women's side, Senta Breden finished 35-1 to become conference champ
in women's foil ahead of Christy Stewart (35-1, 52-8). Melissa Levengood
(epee) finished 31-5 for second place and Patricia Cook (31-5) was third.
The next competition for the fencing team is the NCAA Western Regionals
at UC San Diego on Mar. 1.
