Cal State Fullerton got 7 innings of outstanding pitching from Freshman
Wes Roemer in a 10-5 defeat of Big West Conference foe UCSB, in a Saturday
night contest at Goodwin Field. Roemer (5-1) scattered 7 hits and struck
out 6, in earning his 5th win of the season. Michael Martin (4-5) got
tagged for the loss for the Gauchos.
With the win, the #2 ranked Titans improve to 32-11 on the year and 10-1
in the Big West Conference, maintaining their top position. UCSB drops
to 19-24 on the year and 1-7 in Big West Conference play.
The Titans had 3 players collect 2 RBI apiece, in Justin Turner, Brandon
Tripp, and Ronnie Prettyman, with Prettyman’s coming on a monsterous
2 run homer in the 5th. Brandon Tripp and Blake Davis were the only Titans
with multiple hit games.
Santa Barbara’s Achilles heel was their defense, as 3rd baseman
Jack Pinkerton committed back to back throwing errors in the 5 run Titan
second. In the inning, the Titans paraded 10 players to the plate, highlighted
by back to back doubles from Brandon Tripp and John Curtis.
After giving up a run and 3 hits in the 3rd, Roemer settled down and retired
12 of the next 14 batters he faced. Lauren Gagnier came on to work a perfect
8th, before giving way to Dave Pherrin for the 9th. Pherrin was shaky
in giving up 3 hits and 3 runs, but managed to finish off the win for
Fullerton.
The lone offensive highlight for the Gauchos came in the 9th when Matt
Stevens hit a pinch hit 2 run homer off of Pherrin.
The two teams complete the series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00, with Scott
Sarver going for Cal State Fullerton and Andy Graham going for the Gauchos.
