Bobby Andrews drove home three and Trevor Mortensen added four RBI with
a grand slam as the Cal State Fullerton Titans (29-11) pulled ahead late
in the game to down the UC Davis Aggies 12-7 (21-16) in a non-conference
college baseball game at Dobbins Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Wes Roemer (4-1) picked up his fourth consecutive win going 7.2
innings before giving way to Dave Pherrin who picked up his first Division
I save with a scoreless 1.1 innings. Roemer allowed 11 total hits while
striking out four without walking a batter, with Pherrin going perfect,
striking out two.
Fullerton fell behind after the Aggies spotted their starter Michael Potter
a 5-1 lead after just four innings. The Aggies got to Roemer for three
consecutive hits including a two-run triple by Ryan Royster as they scored
three times in the fourth adding to their 2-1 lead.
Fullerton bounced back in the top half of the fifth scoring four times
courtesy of Trevor Mortensen. Mortensen stepped in with the bases loaded
and drove a Potter offering deep over the left center field wall, tying
the game at five. It was Mortensen’s first home run of the year
and the first for the Titans from the designated hitter’s spot in
the lineup.
Offensively the Titans pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of a season-high
six Aggie errors and scored six times over the final three innings to
clinch the series. Fullerton also exploited Davis’ battery as they
stole five bases on the day without even drawing a throw. Justin Turner
and Bobby Andrews had two swipes each including Turner’s on back-to-back
pitches in the third inning.
Justin Fitzgerald (1-2) earned the loss giving up 3 runs in his 1.1 innings
allowing three hits to the seven batters he faced. Eddie Gamboa followed
with 2.2 innings behind Fitzgerald, surrendering five runs on six hits.
Andrews finished the day leading all hitters with four hits with Mortensen
adding three of his own. Turner and Ronnie Prettyman each had a pair of
hits and an RBI to round out the Titan offense.
Grant Hirneise finished with three hits for UC Davis while Tyler LaTorre
added two doubles and two RBI.
The two teams will conclude the series with a game at Dobbins Field Sunday
afternoon at one o’clock.
