Danny Dorn’s two-out, two-run, walk-off
home run gave No. 2 Cal State Fullerton a 17-15 non-conference victory
over No. 9 Arizona in an offensive showcase at Goodwin Field in front
of 2,274 fans in attendance.
None of the 10 pitchers that pitched left unscathed as both teams combined
for 32 earned runs and 35 hits, including five home runs, in the four
hour twelve minute marathon Sunday afternoon. The offensive explosion
came just two days after seen the same two teams play a nine-inning, 1-0
game Friday night.
With the Titans outlasting the Wildcats they improve to 16-4 on the season,
dropping Arizona to 16- 9 overall.
Seven Titans had multi-hit games with Ronnie Prettyman going a perfect
5-for-5 including his fourth home run of the year off of Sean Jarrett.
Justin Turner had three hits and Bobby Andrews, Sergio Pedroza, Brett
Pill, Felipe Garcia and Dorn each added a pair.
Vinnie Pestano, the fifth Titan pitcher of the day, pitched 2.2 innings
allowing only one earned run and struck out one to improve to 1-1 on the
year.
Arizona’s Jordan Brown, Nick Hundley and Brad Boyer each drove in
three runs for the Wildcats with Brown’s coming off a three-run
home run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 12-12.
Wildcat reliever Mark Melancon (0-2) came into the game trying to save
a 15-13 game for Arizona’s fourth pitcher Sean Rierson, but Fullerton
managed to get a run across in the eighth and three more in the ninth
to give Melancon his second loss of the year.
With an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning, Turner extended
his current hitting streak to 13 games.
Neil Walton, Pill and Dorn each drove in three runners to lead the Titans.
Cal State Fullerton won their fifth consecutive series overall and their
third consecutive series against ranked opponents (Stanford, Tulane and
Arizona) with the win on Sunday,
Fullerton will take Monday off before preparing for a early weekend, non-conference
series with Long Beach State Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All games
