Jered Weaver won his ninth game and Travis Udvarhelyi delivered the go-ahead
double in the fourth as seventh-ranked Long Beach State beat Cal State
Fullerton, 6-2, in a nonconference game at Goodwin Field Friday night.
The 49ers improved to 19-7 overall while Fullerton dropped to 15-15.
Weaver, who improved to 9-0, struck out 11 and walked just one, though
the Titans did tag him with a season-high in runs and hits (seven). Titan
starter Jason Windsor gave up six runs on nine hits in seven innings to
fall to 1-4.
The Titans jumped on Weaver, the leading National Player of the Year candidate,
for two runs on four hits in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Weaver,
who had not allowed more than a run in his first eight starts, gave up
singles to Justin Turner and Ronnie Prettyman before Kurt Suzuki lined
a two-run double high off the left field wall. Suzuki, however, was picked
off at second by Weaver and the Titans would have just one other runner
reach second base.
Windsor held Long Beach at bay through three innings, but gave up a game-tying
two-run single to Danny Mocny in the fourth before Udvarhelyi came through
with a double down the left field line to give the 49ers the lead for
good.
Long Beach added a pair of runs in the fifth in Steve Velazco's two-run
double and scored an unearned run in the sixth when Troy Tulowitzki doubled
in Brad Davis, who had reached on a throwing error.
Mocny was 3-for-4 with two RBI for the 49ers and Jason Vargas had a pair
of hits. Suzuki and P.J. Pilittere each had two hits for the Titans.
Fullerton will try to even the series on Saturday at 5 p.m. The game will
be televised nationally on College Sports Television.
