Same Old Story: Saarloos Dominates in 12-0 Win
Mar. 18, 2001 – Fullerton, Calif.

Kirk Saarloos pitched his fourth complete game in as many starts and his third shutout as 24th-ranked Cal State Fullerton beat Cal Poly, 12-0, in a nonconference baseball game at Goodwin Field Sunday.

The Titans, who took the series two games to one, improved to 13-9 on the season while Cal Poly fell to 17-7.

Saarloos, a senior right-hander out of Long Beach, allowed just five hits, walked none and struck out nine while throwing just 94 pitches. He improved to 5-2 on the season and lowered his Big West Conference-best ERA to 1.09. He has struck out 67 and walked just five in 58.0 innings and opponents are batting .149 against him. Dating back to Feb. 4, Saarloos had faced 149 batters without allowing an extra-base hit before pinch-hitter Chalon Tietje doubled to left field in the eighth inning.

Jared Blasdell, the first of four Mustang pitchers, suffered the loss and fell to 3-2.
Fullerton, which scored in six of its eight at bats, got all it would need with a run in the bottom of the first. David Bacani, batting in the leadoff spot for the first time in 10 games, singled up the middle to start the frame and moved to second and third on balks by Blasdell before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Mike Rouse.

The Titans scored one more in the second and a pair in the fourth to chase Blasdell from the game. Reliever Kevin Correia pitched well for a couple of innings, but got into the trouble in the sixth. Shane Costa led off with a triple and scored on a fielder’s choice by P.J. Pilittere. After a walk to Shane Norris, Bacani belted his second home run of the season – a three-run shot – just inside the left field foul pole to give the Titans an 8-0 lead.

Fullerton added another run in the seventh and capped off the scoring with a three-run eighth, highlighted by an RBI-single by Richie Burgos in his first collegiate at bat.

Bacani finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. Costa and Norris also had two hits each for the Titans. Cal Poly, which used 17 position players, was led by Kevin Tillman, who went 2-for-3.

The Titans will visit Long Beach State next weekend for a nonconference series.
